How community stats are counted

What a weapon page’s Community section shows, where each figure comes from and when it stays empty. Every figure comes from the game itself and from players who sign in here; nothing is taken from other sites.

On this page

In short

  • Usage comes from every public match report Bungie publishes: how many players used the weapon, by mode.
  • Perks, trait pairs, complete rolls, masterworks and mods come from a sample of players’ public profiles: the weapons their characters have equipped.
  • Community rarity counts the collections of players who signed in here (they can turn it off on the Account page).
  • Ratings are given by players signed in with any Bungie account: 1 to 5 for PvE and for PvP.
  • Figures are rolled up once a day, over the last 14 complete days.

Usage

  • We read every public match report (Bungie’s post-game carnage reports) as it is published. A weapon is “used” by a player in an activity when the report lists a kill with it.
  • A weapon’s share is the number of players’ activities in which it was used, out of all players’ activities of that mode (PvE, PvP, or all of them; Gambit counts in All), over 14 days.
  • Its rank compares that share with every weapon of its type, with the weapons of its type that share its frame, and with all weapons. The line under it shows the last twelve weeks; the change compares with the 14 days before.
  • Private matches are left out, and so is any player who opted out of being counted.

Perks, pairs and rolls

  • Each day a uniform sample of the players seen in match reports gets one read of their public profile: the same read Bungie allows any app, and only what Bungie makes public to everyone. That is the gear each character has equipped, with its perks. We never read a vault or an inventory, even when a player has opened theirs.
  • Every character’s equipped weapons count. For the character that played in the match the player was picked from, its weapons count for that match’s mode (PvE or PvP); the other characters’ weapons count in All only.
  • The unit is a sighting: one equipped copy, seen once a day. A player seen on several days counts on each. No item ids or player names are kept: only the counts.
  • A perk’s share is the number of sightings with that perk selected in its column, out of all sightings of the weapon. Enhanced perks count as their base perk. Only perks are counted for weapons whose perks are chosen or rolled; a weapon with a fixed (curated) roll shows its usage only. Crafted copies count, and the figures say how many there were.
  • Trait pairs are the two trait columns together; a complete roll is every perk column at once. Masterworks are shares of the copies with a masterwork stat; mods are shares of the copies with a mod.
  • A weapon’s perk figures show from 300 sightings over 14 days (150 in PvE or PvP). Below that, the page says how many were seen.

Community rarity

  • Bungie keeps players’ collections private unless they open them, so rarity is counted among players who sign in here: when your collections load on this site, your collected items are counted (at most once a day). You can turn this off on the Account page at any time; your counted collection is then removed, and you aren't counted again (even after deleting your saved data) until you turn it back on.
  • “Collected by” is the share of counted players whose collections show the item: who has ever acquired it, not who owns it today.
  • The bands: Very common: 50% or more; Common: 20% to 50%; Uncommon: 5% to 20%; Rare: 1% to 5%; Very rare: 0% to 1%.
  • Rarity shows once 500 players are counted. An item fewer than 10 of them have shows as “under 10”, so nobody's collection can be read from a count that moves by one. Players who sign in to a site like this one tend to play more than most, so items look a little less rare here than across all players.

Ratings

  • Any Bungie account signed in here can rate a weapon from 1 to 5 for PvE and for PvP, change its rating, or clear it.
  • Every version of a weapon (an Adept or a reissue) shares its ratings, as it shares its comments.
  • The average and how the ratings spread show from 10 ratings; below that, only the count, so no single rating can be read. Accounts restricted by the moderators can’t rate, and their ratings don’t count while the restriction lasts.

What it doesn’t show

  • Drop rates: the perk figures show what players equip, not what drops or what they keep in a vault.
  • Everyone: usage covers every public match report, but the perk figures come from a sample, and rarity from players who sign in here.
  • Older figures: each figure covers the last 14 days, so a change in the game shows within two weeks.
